Tuesday November 29 Day 4

We started the day off in the Gym.
Upon returning  to class we graphed the daily high/low temp. and then we read the morning message.  Today we focused on adjectives.    We looked at how adjectives can make your writing more specific and more interesting to the person reading it.    We then used what we learned to write in our Journals.
We had 3 choices   1)  A place I like to be alone         2)  characteristics you look for in a friend
                              3)  your choice

After recess we did a math problem.  Students had 3 boxes on their desks and the problem they had to solve was trying to figure out the length of ribbon they would need, if they had to tie ribbon around each box.
I watched the various strategies they were using to solve this problem.    It was a slow start but after some thinking there were some  great strategies used.    We finished the lesson with an explanation that what they were finding was the perimeter.   Perimeter is the distance around something.   We then looked at how different students solved the problem.

After lunch we looked at different advertisements from the newspapers or magazines and we looked at the fonts, colours, graphics, audience and products being sold, and key words that got our atttention.  Each student had sticky notes to analyse the ad they were given.

We then did work reading to self, word work, writing or reading with the teacher.
Lesson 11 Spelling words : comparisions and superlatives
oldest          smarter          quietest           neatest       youngest
taller  wildest       calmer     cleaner    longer      quicker    stronger

For this lesson I added an extra activity of finding the  base word    comparison (-er)  and superlative (-est)

After our second indoor recess ( ugh!)   we did a little bit of science.  We talked about how seeds from trees and plants get dispersed in the environment.    We had some samples in the class so we looked at them and then discussed how they might travel.   We looked at burrs, "fluff" from milkweed or dandelions, berries, and cones and acorns.     Students had to draw an diagram of each type and explain how they move.
Burrs attach to animals and then fall off, wind blows some, berries are eaten by animals and then "pooped" out in a new location and others fall of trees and grow underneath them if conditions are right.

HOMEWORK: Read.
                            Word Work.
