Today was a busy day. We welcomed a new student Shakeel to the class, and our new student teacher Lorna joined us from OISE. She will be with us for several weeks and will do a four-week block in March.
Today we did an "Personal Introduction" to Lorna in whatever form they would like ( letter, comic, ad, descriptive paragraph). We then did a multiplication review to check understanding before beginning our unit on division. Students should now know up to 7x7, and be able to use pictures, write repeated addition sentences, draw arrays and solve word problems using multiplication.
We had Gym after recess.
After lunch we had our Lesson 16 Spelling test, and got our new words for lesson 17. This week we are focusing on the "long i" sound. We also began talking about narrative writing. We shared what we know about story writing from previous grades. We then made a story planner that we can use to help use write better planned stories. We have characters, setting, and plot. The plot should have a beginning, middle and ending, and there is usually a problem and solution in the story. To challenge students a little bit more, we added that often a story can teach us a lesson or have a bigger message.
After recess, we began an activity about magnetic force. We looked at different magnets and predicted which magnet we think is the strongest and why. We then talked about how we could develop a test to see which is the strongest. We decided we need to have a test that would use numbers some how. We came up with two ideas.... 1) pick up magnetic objects and count them.
2) use a ruler and see how far away the magnet could pick up an magnetic object
