Wednesday October 5 Day 2

It has been a very busy week.      Mr. Greenwald, our teacher candidate began in our class, the day of the cross-country meet when we had half of Mr. McNamara's together with ours.
I was away at a Co-teaching workshop at OISE day Tuesday, but was very pleased to hear that the occasional teacher had a good day.

Today we started off in the Gym with Mr. McCain and when we returned to class we created our graph for October temperature.   We got to practice our patterning skills when adding degrees on one axis as well as adding the date of the other axis.    We then plotted the temperature for three days.

After recess we worked on showing addition of numbers using base-ten blocks.    We looked at how we can trade  10 ones for  1 ten.   This is a review for some on regrouping and for others they learned what regrouping ( or trading) looks like.

After lunch we did our Literacy block.   Students worked on their Word Work by continuing to work on the words in Lesson 3 which were copied down yesterday.    They are to do alphabetical order, little words from big words, and sentences ( or for more of a challenge  they can compose a short paragraph or story).
They were then able to complete their journal entry from this morning and complete  20 of reading to self.
We are also assessing our reading by completing the DRA ( Diagnostic Reading Assessment).

After recess this afternoon, we reviewed what we had learned about maps, and today we focused on the idea of scale.    Maps are small  scaled-down pictures of a place.   We discussed a short distance on a map could mean a very big distance in real-life.    We recopied a small picture on a small grid to a large grid to show how scale is accomplished.    Then we tried to make large image into a small image, by doing the reverse.

Here's a few videos that demonstrate some creative work done by students in drama last Friday.  After working on some body awareness activities, students worked in groups to create a machine with moving parts, using only their bodies.

HOMEWORK:  Study LESSON 2  words for Spelling test
Work on Lesson 3 activities ( optional)
                            Read.
