Thursday October 13, Day 2

We had a change in schedule so Gym was switched from am to pm.      So we started the day off with recording the temperature and writing in our Journals.    We then had a discussion about noise level and talking as the supply teacher was very surprised about the level of chatter.    We also discussed the importance of when to talk, when to work and not interupting others.  

We then we solved a word problem and using the "bansho"  we looked  at the various strategies that different students used to solve this problem.    It was very interesting to see the different ways that students used to solve a 3-digit plus 3digit number ( with regrouping).     Once students had solutions, examples of different strategies were presented and explained by the students themselves.  

  
       eg.) Quang decided she wanted to help children who needed food and shelter. She decided that she would collect pennies from people. On the first day of her fundraising she counted 186 pennies. On the second day she collected 247 pennies. How many pennies does she have so far?

After recess, we revisited the mapping activity that was assigned yesterday by the supply teacher.  There was much confusion about expectations, so some students had to redo the activity.   We also looked at the challenging concept of "scale" as a class.

After lunch the students went to Gym.    When they returned we had a period to work on spelling.
Students are completing alphabetical order, little words from big words, and sentences.     We then read more from the novel "Alvin Ho."   In this chapter, Alvin break a neighbours window with a baseball, and we will see what consequences befall him.

After recess we did some more writing.  We used the photographs that students brought in to write a descriptive paragraph.  We followed the same system as the last few paragraphs were we PLAN our ideas, the do a ROUGH DRAFT.      For this paragraph,  we will begin to self check our work and hi-lite things that we notice are incorrect in our work.   This is the first part of the EDIT  process.
