We started of the day in Gym with Mr. McCain. Mr. McCain thanked the students for being good listeners. That is nice to hear. Changes are showing... that's great.
When we returned to class we graphed the daily high and low temp. handed in our homework on quadrilaterals and started to write in our Journals. We then corrected the punctuation in the morning message and did a math activity on renaming numbers. We learned that 243 can be made by having 2 humdreds, 4 tens and 3 ones, 1 hundred, 14 tens and 3 ones, or 2 hundreds, 3 tens and 13 ones and there are many others. We were learning to regroup numbers and maintain the value, which is a good representation for what regrouping is.
After recess we had a fire drill. Brr. But it was a quiet exit and went fairly well. When we returned we divided into our Math groups, and each group did a difffernt activity. One did a base 10 renaming activity, one did addition with regrouping, another group did geometry, looking at shapes and deciding if they were quadrilateral or parallelograms, and the final group worked on a patterning activity.
After lunch, we completed reading "Alvin Ho." We then did a practice Reading Response as a class so that tomorrow when we have to read at home we know what is expected in the response.
1) Title, author, genre, pages read.
2) Summary: a few sentences stating the main things about what you read that day
3)Connections: text to text, text to self, or text to world
* 4) Personal Response : did you like or dislike the book and why?
*only to be done when a book has been completed.
We then had a chance to study the Lesson 4 spelling words. A test was given.
Lesson 5 words were given. Theme: compound words
outside backyard sometimes football grandmother cupcake
barefoot sunshine baseball birthday sunset popcorn
Students worked on Spelling activities and then had 20 min to read to themselves.
After recess, we started a Science unit. We talked about different areas of science that students knew about and what exactly was science. We decided it is when people test things, and experiment and find things out. Scientists have ideas about how things work. They have a theory and they test and research their theories.
Students raised some interesting questions today.
Many students offered their ideas and theories to try to answer these questions.
eg) What came first the chicken or the egg?
Where did the first dinosaur come from?
Did God make everything or did it happen over a long time?
To set a baseline of knowledge we did a KWL about "trees and leaves". Students are to list as much as they KNOWabout trees and leaves. On the other side of the page, they are to list questions about "What they WANT to know." This will help us to take our learning to a place where students have th most interest.
HOMEWORK: Complete the Know,. Want to know on Trees and Leaves
Read.
